In 1978, the N.C. Foundation for Alcohol and Drug
Studies (NCFADS) was chartered as a
private nonprofit corporation with the support and encouragement of the
N.C. Department
of Human Resources, the Alcoholism Professionals of North Carolina (APNC)
and the
Association of Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP)
The Foundation has continued its professional relationship with the
organization of
Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC) who help sponsor its
schools. Also, the
Foundation has expanded the scope of its planning process to include
establishing professionals
relationships with various other organizations in the addictions field.
The central mission of the NCFADS is to provide training for all
addiction professionals.
The summer and winter schools are sponsored by the North Carolina
Foundation for Alcohol
and Drug Studies and hosted by the Division for Public Service and
Continuing Studies at UNC
Wilmington.

Scholarships are effective ways to assist persons attending the training
sponsored by the North
Carolina Foundation for Alcohol and Drug Studies (NCFADS). These
scholarship funds are
credited directly to a school participant's account to assist meeting
NCFADS costs to cover
training, housing and food expenses. In many cases, scholarship
support provides the only way
some addiction professionals can attend NCFADS training.
We need donors who will be partners with NCFADS in making
scholarships available to
those who need financial assistance to attend training that will improve
the quality of treatment
they provide to addicted clients.
All gifts to support scholarships are treated as contributions to
the NCFADS and are tax
deductible. The donor will receive a receipt for the gift and will
be recognized at each training
school during the year.

General Scholarships
* Donors may contribute any amount at any time into the general
fund.
* All contributions are deposited in the general scholarship endowment
fund.
* We encourage donations equal to a full-time resident option.
Named Scholarships
* The minimum amount to formally create a named scholarship is $1,000
plus the value of a full-
time resident student at each subsequent school.
*Value of the full-time resident option for subsequent schools may
increase slightly due to
increased operating costs, i.e., food, housing, etc.
Endowed Scholarships
* Endowed scholarships are named and require an initial gift of
$15,000 or that amount pledged
over 3 years.
* Endowment earnings are reinvested in the scholarship principle to allow
for growth and inflation.
* Endowed scholarships are self-sustaining and maintain their own
identities for reporting
purposes.
* All endowed scholarships are named and listed in each school catalog and
announced at each
school.
* The first endowed recipient will be announced approximately one year
from the donation date.

Since the NCFADS operates on an October-September fiscal year, most
payments for named or
endowed scholarships are made by May 15 of each year. This allows
NCFADS to budget for the
coming year and complete the scholarship application, approval and
notification process.
Donations into the general scholarship fund may be made at any time during
the year. Gifts of stocks
and property are often used to fund scholarships. The NCFADS is
prepared to assist with these non-
cash gifts.
Other scholarships are planned and funded through wills.

* All scholarships are listed in appropriate NCFADS publications and on
this website.
* Gifts of cash and non-cash may be accepted.
* Certain non-cash gifts may not be accepted by NCFADS.
* Twelve months notice is required to discontinue a named or endowed
scholarship.
* As with all foundations, all gifts are irrevocable.
